11 Day Explore Uganda

Murchison Falls, Kibale Forest chimpanzee trek, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Gorilla tracking and Lake Mburo -  This tour allows you to witness the abundance of Uganda's wildlife.  Encountering Gorillas and chimpanzee will leave you with lifelong memories.

Itinerary

Day 1 Murchison Falls National Park
Begin the panoramic drive north-west through the famous Luwero Triangle and Masindi Town, with a stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary on route to Murchison Falls National Park.  We arrive in time for a visit to the top of the falls, where you get to experience the awesome site of the whole river getting compressed through a 6 metre gap in the rocks before dropping 44 metres with a thunderous roar. It creates rainbows and plumes of spray giving opportunities for some great photographs. Enjoy the sunset as we then make our way to our accommodation.

Day 2 Murchison Falls National Park
We rise with the sun for our early game drive. Here we hope to find lions, leopard, elephants, buffalo, giraffe, hartebeest, waterbuck, oribi, bushbuck, Bohor reedbuck, hyena and many more of Africa’s big game. After lunch, we take a boat safari upstream to the base of the falls, stopping just tens of metres from the "Devil's Cauldron".  En-route, marvel at the toothsome hippos, crocodiles and possibly elephant, waterbuck and Uganda Kob. This is also home to many bird species like Goliath heron, Egyptian goose, pelican bee-eater, kingfisher, hornbill, cormorant and the rare shoebill stork.

Day 3 Fort Portal
This morning we take the long drive south through verdant countryside, past traditional homesteads and farms, towards the crater lake region of Fort Portal, near Kibale Forest. The scenery is breathtaking, enabling plenty of photo opportunities. Fort-Portal rests in the shadow of the fabled “Mountains of the Moon”.  Approximate drive time - 7 hours.

Day 4 Kibale Forest, Queen Elizabeth National Park
After breakfast we head off for a guided trek through Kibale Forest in search of man’s closest relative, the chimpanzee. The sounds of the chimps carry through the forest very clearly, so approaching and watching these creatures in their natural habitat is a fantastic wildlife viewing experience. The forest is also home to several other species of primates including black and white colobus, red colobus, olive baboon, red-tailed monkey, blue monkey, L'Hoest's monkeys as well as an incredible array of birdlife. After lunch, we proceed to Queen Elizabeth National Park following the mystical Rwenzori Mountain Range with game drive en route to view lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo, hyena and a variety of antelope species. During the afternoon we take a walk through Bigodi Wetlands, featuring 8 primate species, over 200 bird species, reptiles, and other interesting mammals.

Day 5 Queen Elizabeth National Park
We start the day with an early morning game drive in Queen Elizabeth National Park. In the afternoon, we take the boat launch on the Kazinga Channel where hippos, crocodiles, elephants and buffalo will be in great abundance either at the waters edge, or along side your boat! This trip passes through possibly the highest concentration of hippos and offers an excellent platform for photography, bird watching and game viewing. The prolific bird life is colourful and stupendous with well over 550 resident species.

Day 6 Queen Elizabeth National Park
This morning, watch the sun rise as you view game in the wilderness of Queen Elizabeth Park. In the afternoon, we take another game drive in search of any species that may have eluded us thus far.

Day 7 Queen Elizabeth National Park - Ishasha
This morning we transfer south to the Ishasha Sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park. The star attraction is a pride of tree climbing lions that are regularly seen. Great herds of buffalo are common in Ishasha as are Uganda Kob and Giant Forest Hog.  Hippos frequent the Ishasha River; waterbuck, bushbuck and topi are among other large ungulates often spotted.

Day 8 Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Today we will have another early morning game drive, before proceeding to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. We drive through the "Switzerland of Africa" area known as the Kigezi Highlands, with its terraced hillside agricultural lands and winding roads. We arrive in the mountain gorillas’ habitat to spend the night on the misty mountains in anticipation of our tracking adventure.

Day 9 Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
Rise with the sun for breakfast, followed by a meeting with a ranger guide before setting off into the gorilla sanctuary.  The rain forest offers a dramatic steeply forested landscape and is incredibly dense, criss-crossed by numerous animal trails. Your trek’s time and terrain vary according to the movements of the marvelous mountain gorillas. Tracking these gentle giants is rated as one of Africa's best wildlife watching opportunities.  Other mammals may include the rare golden monkey, buffalo, elephant, black-fronted duiker, bushbuck, leopard, and giant forest hog. By the time you return to camp your memories will be embedded in your mind forever.

Day 10 Lake Mburo National Park
Today we leave the mountains behind and drive through the twisted and winding roads before emerging onto the lower thorn and savannah scrub lands of Lake Mburo National Park.  Lying in the one part of Uganda covered in extensive acacia woodland, Mburo has markedly different fauna to other parks and reserves. Zebra, buffalo, Uganda Kob and plenty of other species abound in this beautiful park; this is the best place in the country to see the eland antelope. During the afternoon we take a boat trip to a fishing village, followed by evening game drive. The five lakes within the park attract hippos, crocodiles and a variety of waterbirds, while fringing swamps house the sitatunga antelope and the papyrus gonelek. Mburo is the closest national park to Kampala and offers a refreshing stopover when travelling to or from the western parks and reserves.

Day 11 walking safari, departureThis morning we are going to take a walking safari, complete with a ranger, to get close to the many animals that roam within the park. Afterwards we continue our drive to Kampala, arriving at your destination by late afternoon.
